Cold formed steel

This 6 story commercial building at 463 Pulaski Street with floor to ceiling windows has 4" cold formed steel studs to maximize use of a narrow 20' lot.

Joists with holes (Big Apple Joist) were used to run piping and conduits, increasing the ceiling height by 4" since there's no drop ceiling.

CMU elevator walls and flat strap X-bracing were used to satisfy NYC Building Code for wind and earthquake resistance. Steel works, but is more expensive and needs shop drawings. Some engineers specify only flat strap X-bracing, but it doesn't work for most buildings more than 2 stories if there's a DOB audit.

We maximized rentable space by also using 4" bearing studs at stairs. And almost no welding was used, saving money in special inspections!
